To become a licensed Mortgage Loan Originator (MLO) in Florida, follow these steps:

  1. Create an NMLS Account: Register with the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System & Registry (NMLS) to obtain a unique NMLS ID number.
  2. Complete Pre-Licensing Education: Finish 20 hours of NMLS-approved pre-licensing education, which includes:
    • 3 hours of federal law and regulations
    • 3 hours of ethics
    • 2 hours of non-traditional mortgage lending
    • 10 hours of electives
    • 2 hours of Florida-specific content
  3. Pass the SAFE MLO Test: Schedule and pass the National Test Component with Uniform State Content, achieving a score of at least 75%. citeturn0search3
  4. Complete Background Checks:
    • Federal Criminal Background Check: Authorize this through your NMLS account and submit fingerprints via an approved vendor.
    • State Criminal Background Check: Submit fingerprints to a Live Scan Service Provider approved by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) using ORI Number: FL737111Z.
  5. Authorize a Credit Report: Through NMLS, authorize the release of your credit report for review.
  6. Submit Your Application: Complete and submit Form MU4 through NMLS, including all required documentation and fees.
  7. Obtain Sponsorship: Secure employment with a state-licensed mortgage lender or broker, who will sponsor your license.
